Renault revealed Eolab, a technology showcase that announces consumption of 100 km / l of CO2 emissions of 22 g / km. This hybrid gasoline study anticipates a hybrid production model which is expected to be launched in about a decade. The French brand justifies these values ​​by reducing weight (by using lighter materials such as aluminum and magnesium - representing a reduction of 400 kg compared to the average for B-segment cars), aerodynamics (by introducing among others, an active spoiler and side flaps that activate as ailerons) and the debut of ZE Hybrid technology (a new hybrid rechargeable solution that ensures low consumption and allows to travel in 100% electric mode on routes less than 60 km speed up to 120 km / h). According to Renault, the Eolab concept is an essay that prepares technologies to put into practice by 2020 a car capable of consumption of 50 km / l. This objective corresponds, in turn, to the challenge launched by the French government under the Nouvelle France Industrielle plan.

The EOLAB recipe

Making 100 km with just 1 liter, the EOLAB prototype is the result of the combination of three ingredients: aerodynamics, weight reduction, petrol-electric 'ZE Hybrid' technology:

- weight reduction: reduction of 400 kg in weight compared to a B-segment vehicle, thanks mainly to a body made up of multiple materials including steel, aluminum and composite materials, as well as a surprising magnesium roof of only 4 kg. This weight reduction is a virtuous circle, allowing to reduce the size and cost of the prototype systems (engine, battery, wheels, brakes, etc.) and compensate for the choice of more expensive materials.

- ZE Hybrid technology: compact and affordable, this new rechargeable hybrid solution has very low consumption and, above all, "zero emission" mobility ** on routes of less than 60 km and a speed of up to 120 km / h. ZE Hybrid technology will complement Renault's "zero emission" electric line ** in the coming years.

Contribution to the 'New French Industrial' plan

EOLAB is part of the project 'vehicle that consumes 2 liters / 100 km for all' launched under the 'New France Industrial' plan by 2020. But with the EOLAB prototype, Renault goes beyond goal set by the government in positioning its research project in a longer time horizon. In designing this prototype, Renault prepares the necessary technologies to launch a car capable of consuming less than 2 liters / 100 km in 2020. To achieve this, Renault has worked on a logic of collaborative innovation with partners of the French automobile industry , such as Saint-Gobain for the windows, Faurecia for the seats, Michelin for the tires and Continental for the braking system. Renault has also counted on other major partners, such as Posco, mainly for magnesium components. Thanks to their specific know-how, the partners were able, each with their expertise, to make a precious contribution to the feat performed by Renault with the EOLAB prototype.

EOLAB Concept: a concept car for dreaming

EOLAB is part of Renault's eco2 environmental strategy

With the EOLAB, Renault materializes its desire to be one step ahead in reducing the environmental footprint of its vehicles, responding to the challenge of bringing the extremely low consumption to reach the largest number of people. It materializes Renault's environmental strategy and its commitment to continue seeking to reduce the environmental footprint of these vehicles. Zero Emission ** Emission Response: Effective Response to Air Quality Problem

According to a scientific modeling of the atmospheric environment based on data from the city of Rome, achieving a percentage of 20% zero emission vehicles in the central transit area significantly reduces the concentration of pollutants harmful to health . In the more polluted streets, the calculation shows a decrease that reaches up to 30% for particles that cause respiratory or cardiovascular pathologies, and up to 45% for NO2, a potent respiratory system irritant. The ZE Hybrid solution proposed by Renault is, along with the ZE range of 4 electric vehicles, a new and effective response to this public health challenge. A scientific study carried out by the company ARIA Technologies, a European leader in atmospheric modeling, and its Italian subsidiary ARIANET, in collaboration with the City of Rome and the Regional Agency for the Protection of the Environment of Latium.

EOLAB has a SCx of 0.470 m2 (S = 2.00 m2 and Cx = 0.235), that is, an overall gain of 0.200 m2, corresponding to an improvement of approximately 30% in relation to one Clio IV. This improved trawling leads to a very significant reduction in high-speed consumption: at a steady speed of 130 km / h, this represents  a reduction of 1.2 liters/ 100 km compared to the reference vehicle.

This exceptional aerodynamic performance is based on the combination of several components:

- Breaking architecture: this innovative choice allowed to reduce the rear gauge and lower the roof at the same time which maintains habitability;

- design of rear body forms particularly well cared for;

- active systems, to be a step further in the quest for aerodynamics.

Important: The indicator that characterizes the overall aerodynamic performance of a vehicle is the SCx, ie the front surface in m2 of the vehicle (S), multiplied by its air penetration coefficient, the famous Cx. Clio IV presents an SCx of 0.670 m2, which puts it at a good average in its segment. However, even so, it is not about gaining SCx at the expense of design and other attributes such as habitability.
